It’s in the Water
ADHD, AED, ASD: It’s in the Water
The #FLINT water crisis shines a spotlight on the adverse effects of lead-contaminated drinking water, presenting us, in concentrated form, with a list of symptoms that this author believes is also prevalent to some degree in broader American society.
What are the health effects and dangers of lead?
When cells in the brain absorb lead, it tends to affect the frontal cortex, the area responsible for abstract thought, planning, and attention, and the hippocampus, essential to learning and memory. …
… Lead can change how signals are passed within the brain, how memories are stored, even how cells get their energy, resulting in life-long learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and lower IQs.

The symptoms listed above are pervasive in our schools, work places, playgrounds and every-day life. They are not the cause of but contribute to ‘Trump-itis’, the racism that prompted the formation of #BlackLivesMatter and other recent social phenomenon. Could it be that the root cause of the decline in social and communication skills that is becoming more and more evident can be traced to the water we drink?
Social media can be a wonderful communication tool, but all too often is an outlet for rage expressed in uneducated, uninformed fashion, highlighting the lack of fundamental communication skills. This behavior is spreading into Main Street, the community at large. On MSNBC’s AM Joy (12/3/16) Joy Reid, in a segment titled “Trump supporter rant videos go viral”, highlights part of a 30 minute rant by a young lady claiming reverse discrimination simply because she was asked to purchase a $1 reusable bag to carry her goods. Joi calls this “Acute Discrimination Envy”. While this “Acute Discrimination Envy” (ADE) focuses on one aspect, it falls under the symptoms visible in the growing list of social/behavioral disorders.
The mental effects of poisoning will express themselves differently depending upon social, economic, and educational demographics independent of racial specificity. It may lead to overreaction of a police officer imagining his life is in danger, an airline passenger fearing the Arab-looking man doing complex mathematics, the airline staff escorting the offender, not the offendee who feels threatened by someone ‘speaking Arabic’, off the plane or the young lady thinking she’s being discriminated against simply because a person of color was offering what otherwise would be taken as common customer service.
We need to take a closer look at the ‘allowed additives’ to the fluids we ingest. Start by taking water samples from 173 randomly selected cities and rural areas. Test for water purity looking not only at lead content but also fluoride and other ‘acceptable’ content and impurities.
When a police officer shoots anyone test his or her blood and urine immediately. Gather the data and see if there are commonalities. In cases of ‘abnormal social disruption’ (ASD) do the same tests and gather data. I believe we’ll discover that the root causes stem from the contaminated water we drink and the processed foods we eat.
We should ask ourselves if these additives are helpful or detrimental to our health. Can we increase mental and physical health and reduce health costs simply by reducing the here-to-fore allowable parts-per-billion?
Perhaps we, as a nation, need to pay closer attention to the adage “You are what you eat”.

In a TEDTalks video Dr. David A. Sousa at TEDxASB lists caffeine, aspartame, food preservatives and colorings as the major additives which can lead to ADHD-like symptoms.
Fluoride Affects Many Tissues in Your Body Besides Your Teeth
…according to a 500-page scientific review, fluoride is an endocrine disruptor that can affect your bones, brain, thyroid gland, pineal gland and even your blood sugar levels.
There have been over 34 human studies and 100 animal studies linking fluoride to brain damage, including lower IQ in children, and studies have shown that fluoride toxicity can lead to a wide variety of health problems…
